improving wellbeing through the arts

Turn it Up was the idea of a young dancer and her mentor, who saw an increase in anti-social behaviour, knife crime and mental health concerns for young people during Covid. They wanted to create opportunities for young people to be productive and creative during the holidays. We know that dance is uniquely placed to improve wellbeing, as it is both physical activity and creative expression, as well as social and fun.

We teamed up with Reading School of Dance, Venxm Music, Real Time and Readipop to create a week of music, dance and film making, allowing participants to try lots of different creative skills, find their passion, and bring them all together in a final project.

The film and documentary they made was screened at Reading University, Film, Theatre and Television Department as part of a celebratory event, attended by over 50 audience members.
